About our Club

Cockermouth Scottish Country Dance Club started in 1960 with a few friends meeting together to dance and has since blossomed into a thriving Club.  We meet at the Methodist Church Hall in Lorton Street, Cockermouth, CA13 9RH, from 7 – 9.15 pm on Thursday evenings from September to May.  We pride ourselves on being a very friendly Club and we welcome all dancers – from beginners to the more experienced – to these evenings, which are a combination of teaching and dancing.

Separately to this, we have a Young Dancers’ Class and a New Dancers’ Class; we also have an affiliated adult class in Bassenthwaite village on Monday evenings. There is more information about all of our classes on the ‘Classes‘ page.

The Club regularly organises two dances each year – a Spring Dance in May and our St. Andrew’s Dance at the end of November – where we dance to live music provided by well-known Scottish Dance Bands.   In May 2022, after two years of Covid-related delays, we were finally able to celebrate our “60th” anniversary with a Grand Ball, attended by members, friends and dancers from all over the country.

Although dancing generally takes a break between May and September, we have in recent years organised some informal dance sessions during June and we usually hold an informal summer dance at Loweswater in July with strawberries and ‘fizz’.
Club members also often attend dances organised by other Scottish Country Dance Clubs in the area.

The Club welcomes everyone from beginners to experienced dancers.  We are also pleased to welcome dancers from other areas who are visiting Cumbria.  You don’t need to bring a partner, as we take new partners for each dance.  Soft shoes, a smile and the ability to listen are all you need to enjoy the music and dancing in a friendly and supportive group.

Our annual Club Membership fee is £10.  Standard class fees are £65 per year or two termly payments of £32.50.  
Visitors’ first week is free, after that the charge is £5 per class.  After 4 weeks, they are asked to join and pay the membership fee and termly class fees less what they have already paid.
